He came home from his Dad's today with high temp and bad diorrhea, he just lies around not making much noise looking very pale. He is 2 and usually very very energetic.
I am giving Calpol for temp but wondered if there is anything I can give to settle his bowels? he is in so much pain when he needs to poop. poor little lamb :-(Can you give me some advice about my sick toddler?
poor guy, try pedialyte to keep him hydrated and then give him starchy foods like bread, potatos or pasta, plain. Bananas also help the potassium in them acts like fiber. Hope I helped, my little one is in daycare and if he doesn't come home once a year like that...Can you give me some advice about my sick toddler?
Phone NHS 24 for advice! Especially since he is so young. However give him calpol at regular intervals, diorylite is good for replacing lost body fluid in kids esp when they have vomiting and/or diarrhoea and make sure he takes plenty of fluids. Hope he gets better soon.
i would take himto the dcs to be sure or the hospital can't risk anything with children now keep a close eye on him loads of fluids
all the best
I think plenty of fluid, the flat coke idea is not bad and try a tummy massage, possibly a warm (hot) water bottle, also try NHS Direct. If goes on for too long then see a doctor quickly and don't take any nonsense. Doctors are just human mechanics everybody seems to think there Gods and my experience is they're not.
PS. The assumption by one of your answerers that the reason could be because Dad looked after him badly should be disregarded. That sounds like bad feminism.
dont leave him too long, diorrhea can soon run a child of 2 down, might be best you have the doc look at him.
keep given the calpol and make sure he drinks lots of water to help wash his system out don't give him any orange juice as this can make it worse .. some dry toast or mash will help alittle if he gets worse take him to the Dr or get him to do a home visit
keep him cool and ring a doctor hope hes better soon.xx
You posted this question 4 days ago. If he's still like this I really hope common sense has taken over and you've taken him tho the doc by now! When my children have diorrhea then I make sure they have plenty liquids and use the BRAT diet - Bananas,Rice,Apples,Toast. Introduce them one by one over a few days.Seems to help. Also - Yaccult or some other friendly-bacteria drink helps kick start them back into normal action. Flat lemonade also seems to help with an upset tummy.
Bless, the poor little thing. Your right to give him Calpol, also make sure he drinks plenty of water. Put him on the sofa with his quilt and favourite DVD, he'll be fine in no time. But if it hasn't cleared up in a few days take him to the doctor who can prescribe something. Good luck.
go to the emergency room for rehydration. If he's listless, that's a bad sign. I'm sure he's fine, so I don't mean to worry you. But better safe than sorry. On a side note, if you think his father didn't take care of him, you should try to get custody take away from him -- it's not fair that you have to deal with his bad parenting which got your baby sick.
Take him to the hospital, Diareah combined with a fever is means he has an infection, especially because he is lathargic its never a good sign keep him pumped with clear fluids like Pedialite and some toast it will provide absorbtion (supervise him so he doesnt choke) but if he isnt showing improvement in 24 hours please take him to the Dr. better to be safe than sorry with out lil angels. Best Wishes
Mint or peppermint will help. I like peppermint tea with sugar however that's not for a little boy's tastes. You could give him sugar free mints to suck on. That would settle his tummy.
Also, I would give him clear fluids until the bowels settle down. I recommend a dry soup mix made up (like Lipton's). That way he'll get the fluids he needs and it's full of salt so it'll help keep him from being dehydrated.
You can try the liquid form of imodiam(sp). I've given it to my 2 y/o once and it helped. Just cut the smallest dose in half and give him that.
He may have the rota virus, your best bet is to force feed him fluids,
when my son had this virus he was almost two years old, and I used a medicine dropper to force pedialyte into him. If he appears to be dehydrated take him to an ER right away here are some symptoms: thirst, irritability, restlessness, lethargy, sunken eyes, a dry mouth and tongue, dry skin, fewer trips to the bathroom to urinate, and (in infants) a dry diaper for several hours.
here is a website with some of the signs and symptoms of the rotavirus

and here is what the cdc has to say

Call the local walk in center or take him along to get checked out..
Don't take chances with a 2 yr old they can't tell you whats wrong.
to make sure that he doesn't dehydrate try (in the uk) dioralyte, it replaces the body's essential minerals ect...and a bit of an old wives tale but honey and lemon drinks are good for everything, my mum always used it on me whether it was a sore throat or diaorrhea. and you could always try giving him some dry biscuits like digestives because they are high in fibre and will help to get something into him that hopefully won't come out as diaorrhea! but to be honest if you are really worried don't feel like you are overreacting if you call the doctor out!
plenty of water.
Doctors usually recommend not giving any medication and letting the bowels heal on their own. It takes about 24 to 48 hours for them to settle. In the mean time give your son plain food and make sure to keep him very hydrated. If you see that the fiber and diarrhea persist after this time frame I would suggest to call the doctor for further advice. I hope your soon gets better soon.
Calpol, fliuds, if he doesn't get any better, whisk him off to the quacks in the morning. I'm sure he will be fine. My son had something similar a while back. He was fine after some tlc and a fair amount of Calpol (I didn't give him over the stated dose tho!!)
Good luck :)
make sure he drinks plenty of fluids and if he seems to get any worse, call a doctor or take him to the ER straight away, especially if he develops a rash.
Calpol is good but more importantly make sure he gets lots and lots of fluid inside him, this will help bring down the temperature and stop him dehydrating because of the diorrhea,if it continues any more than 12 hrs get him to the doctors.
oh, how sad. Try giving him pepto or Milanta. Or you could give him a belly rub. That is what my dad used to do for me and I remember it worked quite well.
Give him plenty of fluids, try him with plain food as in non greasy as for the pain try rubbing his belly, if he's no better in the morning take him to your GP or ER.
Hope he's feeling better soon and good luck.
call the doctor, most have nurse lines if it is after hours, he may need to be seen. They will tell you what is safe for him to take or if he needs to see a doc.
Everyone has given you good advice, however trust your own instincts, if you are worried contact help
Sounds like the flu...but if he has a temperature for more than 24 hours or if it's over 101, take him to the emergency room...give him pedialyte for the bowel movements, you can find that at wal-mart in the baby care isle, this will also help with hydration, he needs to stay in bed and sleep, that will help rebuild his immune system..also a lil tlc from mommy might help his mood, and get rid of the sick blues..rent a couple of his favorite movies, and give him a spot on the couch so he doesn't feel left out....
Also if you are worried about his temperature, childerens motrin works well, and doesn't taste too horrid...
Stay away from sodas, gatorade right now, the excess sugar can make diarrhea worse.
If his stomach isn't hurting tomarrow, try some chicken soup and crackers...or some jello....
sorry to hear about your little boy, one of the most important things is to keep him hydrated, so give him plenty of fluids.
if your worried about him (as im sure you are hes only small)
ring NHS direct,(i put the number below) you'll speak to a receptionist they'll take your little boys symptoms, they will get passed to a nurse or doctor (ive rang them before there very helpful, and dont feel your wasting there time, your not. dont take any chances with him being so small
call them on 0845 4647

You should call the pediatrician. Try feeding him some yogurt and bananas for the diarrea. Also the BRAT diet (banana, rice, applesauce, I can't remember the T)
Have you taken him to the doctor? When my son had that I gave him pedialite and the pedialite popsicles. There isn't really much you can do about him pooping. You could try giving him crackers....bananas...lots of water. Since he is only 2 I would talk to your doc before trying anything out like pepto bismol or anything like that just to be safe. I remember my son having this and he was in the hospital. He was sick for like 2 weeks. The poor little guy. I hope he gets better.
Take him to the doctor, but give him either coke, boiled water or ginger beer to keep him hydrated.
try letting a drop of coke go flat and give him that it worked on my 4year old plus its easier to get them to take than pepto or anything like that.
