depending on the length of the flight...a portable dvd player, cd player, video games are good investments for longer flights. coloring and activity books, snacks...lots of snacks especially for the 5 year old unless they are totally not picky, my kids wont eat airline food most of the time and they get hungry when its not mealtime......fruit snacks, the little single serve containers of pringles, things that dont get smashed easily are great. make sure they have something chew off for take offs and landings (gum, taffy, tootsie rolls allwork ) also check your airlines website and look at the traveling with children section to see what services they have for your kids....and if its a long flight that has meals check the meal section also and see if they offer childrens meals, if they do you need to call them at least 24 hours in advance and request the special meals. these foods are usually more appealing to kids....most airlines that have them you can order them up to age 12. ive taken my kids at much younger than that on flights as long as 16 hours (chicago to tokyo) and they were just fineWhat advice / tips do you have for first time air travel with children (10 and 5)?
Bring lots of entertainment- Game Boy, books, coloring books, stickers, etch-a-sketch, UNO cards, AND lots of snacks-easy to eat finger food. Carrot sticks, cut up apples, grapes, chips, etc. Also, when you are on the inside of security, purchase water or juice in bottle at the food courts. You CAN bring on liquids that are purchased AFTER you pass through security. You could buy them A portable DVD player to occupy them.
Just be prepared with a carry on of things they can do - coloring books, books to read, magazines such as nick Jr., music with headphones is great, hand held video games. I am sure they will do just fine, they will prob. be so excited to fly for the first time! OH and bring gum just in case their little ears start popping, gum helps! Have a safe flight!
gum is a good idea for ears
colouring book for younger and reading book for older
tell them before you get on that you are going to swap seats every x so that everyone gets a turn at the window
Purchase several pairs of ear plugs to hand out to the passengers to the right and left, front and back of you.
Bring some hand held games, and hope there isn't a delay or turbulence.
give them gum for the ride it helps the popping puzzle books and cheap games to keep em entertained also try to get to the airport early and explain to them to behave at securtiy etc and it should be fine i travled with 4 - 5 year olds
Give them gum to chew for the liftoff because it will pop their ears and they might become scared. Also it will take their mind of the liftoff in a fun way. TRY IT !! : )
dont eat other passengers or jump out of the plane
